The church at the centre of five centuries
Highlights
- A sixteenth-century church that survived fires
- The oldest building still standing in the city
- A fort preserved rather than demolished
- History kept underneath a modern square
- Five centuries explained in one call
About this tour
This call follows the oldest layers of Santa Cruz, from the sixteenth-century Iglesia de la Concepción to the buried remains of Castillo de San Cristóbal underneath the modern square above it. Ana explains how both buildings survived centuries of fires, rebuilding and changing coastlines. The session shows a city that kept its oldest structures rather than clearing them away.
Ana begins inside the church with a short sound check before moving toward the square. She keeps a formal, steady pace between the two stops, taking questions about the buildings' history as they arrive, and sends a short written summary once the call ends.
It suits anyone interested in how a modern city preserves what sits beneath it. It also works well as a first orientation to the old town's history.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
