I grew up watching boats cross the river to the painted houses on the far bank, long before I understood why a fishing village ended up looking the way it does. On camera I try to let the colours speak for themselves rather than describing them too much, since a good description of colour is still worse than simply showing it well. I plan crossings for the hour when the light hits the house fronts most directly. Regulars ask why the colours were chosen in the first place, and the honest answer is more practical than romantic.
