I grew up a few streets from the Praca Infante Dom Henrique and walked past the statue there most mornings on my way to the harbour where my father worked. Most visitors photograph the square quickly and move on without knowing why a navigator's statue stands there at all. On camera I like starting at the statue and working outward to the fort at the harbour mouth, since the two sit only a short walk apart and explain each other. Eight years of guiding later, I still find something new to point out along that same short stretch of Lagos.
