I have walked Madeira's levadas since I was a boy, following the water channels my grandfather helped maintain in the hills above Funchal. Now I carry a phone instead of a hoe and show people the same paths on camera, the laurel forest, the tunnels cut by hand, the sudden view down toward Pico do Arieiro. I keep the camera steady on the narrow sections and slow down at the viewpoints so you can hear the water properly. What I like about guiding this way is that the island looks exactly as green on a screen in winter as it does standing there yourself.
