Pico do Arieiro, ridgelines above the clouds
Highlights
- Volcanic ridges above the clouds
- A summit over 1,800 metres up
- Terraced fields seen from above
- How the island's peaks were formed
- A different angle on Arieiro's ridgeline
About this tour
This session climbs by road to Pico do Arieiro, one of Madeira's highest points, and shows the shift from laurel forest to bare volcanic rock. You see ridgelines dropping away from a summit platform and a second viewpoint looking back from below. João explains how the peaks formed from the island's original volcano.
The drive up takes a few minutes of screen time before the walk proper begins at the summit, then works its way back down through two further stops. Cloud cover changes by the hour here, so no two sessions look quite the same.
This suits viewers who want Madeira's dramatic side rather than its gentle one. It also works well early in the morning, when the light and cloud tend to be at their most striking.
Included

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 10 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Funchal before heading out.
-
Road to the peak 21 min
The drive climbs quickly out of the clouds, and I keep the camera on the window as the laurel forest gives way to bare volcanic rock.
-
Summit platform 21 min
From the viewing platform at over one thousand eight hundred metres, the camera turns slowly across ridges that drop away on both sides. I explain how these peaks formed from the island's original volcano.
-
Ninho da Manta viewpoint 21 min
A short stop lower down looks back at the summit from a different angle, often with cloud sitting in the valleys below like a sea.
-
Descent and terraces 21 min
On the way down I show the terraced fields cut into the hillside, still farmed by hand, and explain how levadas bring them water from higher up the mountain.
-
Your questions 18 min
Time to ask anything about Funchal: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 8 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bacalhau à Madeirense and Câmara de Lobos, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Madeira time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 6 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
