I teach history at a school a few streets from the cathedral, so I have walked past the night watchman's tower more times than I can count without ever getting used to hearing the hour called from it. On camera I explain the tradition, unbroken since the 15th century, before moving down the last covered wooden staircase of its kind left in Switzerland. I like tracing how the upper and lower parts of the old town connect, since the change in height shaped the city as much as anything else. I keep my sessions measured and specific, since Lausanne's old town rewards close attention. I take questions after each stop.
