Mareike Schulz

I studied Jewish history at the Humboldt University and spent two years in Tel Aviv on a scholarship, which is why my Hebrew is decent and my coffee order is embarrassing. Since 2014 I have guided in Mitte, mostly in the Spandauer Vorstadt, the old Scheunenviertel around Oranienburger Straße and Hackescher Markt. I like working from small evidence: a name on a Stolperstein, a bricked-up doorway in the Sophienhöfe, a line in an 1890s address book. I will not recite dates at you for three hours. I would rather show you one courtyard properly and explain who lived there, what they sold and what happened to them. My second love is the Museum Island collections, where I used to work as a freelance docent at the Pergamon before the long renovation closed half of it. I live in Prenzlauer Berg with my partner and a very old cat, and on Sundays you will usually find me at the Mauerpark flea market looking for postcards. Everything I do is now live on video: I walk Berlin with my phone, and you can ask me anything as we go.
