Milica Petrović

My parents came to Vienna from Kraljevo in Serbia in 1991 and I was born three years later in Ottakring, the sixteenth district. Ottakring is the Vienna of brewery chimneys, social housing, the Brunnenmarkt and families from everywhere between Belgrade and Istanbul. I studied political science and wrote my bachelor thesis on Red Vienna, the social housing programme of the 1920s, and I still think it is the most interesting thing this city ever did. Before guiding I worked for an NGO helping new arrivals find flats, so I know the housing system from both sides. My tours show the Vienna outside the first district, where most Viennese live. I am chatty and I get excited about council housing, which people find funny until they see the Karl-Marx-Hof. I speak German, Serbian and English every day, often in the same sentence. These days I guide Vienna live on video: I walk the streets with my phone and answer your questions as we go.
