About this tour

This session follows Vienna's Red Vienna housing programme from Karl-Marx-Hof, a single block running for a kilometre, to a modern council building built on the same idea decades later. You see the Waschsalon, once the block's shared laundry, and hear how fighting reached these buildings in February 1934. It closes with why so much of Vienna is still built this way.

The guide checks sound outside Karl-Marx-Hof, then walks its length before moving to the Waschsalon and the newer building beyond. You can ask questions about the politics, the architecture or the 1934 fighting throughout the call. A short list of the buildings and their dates comes through afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in housing policy or twentieth-century European history looking for a concrete example rather than a theory. It also suits former Vienna residents curious about a part of the city outside the usual routes.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Vienna before heading out.

  2. Karl-Marx-Hof 21 min

The camera moves along the full length of Karl-Marx-Hof, a single housing block running for a kilometre. The guide explains why the city built on this scale in the 1920s and what the arches and towers were designed to say.

  3. The Waschsalon 21 min

The camera looks in at the Waschsalon, once the block's communal laundry and now a small museum of the building's history. The guide explains what tenants shared here and points out marks left from the fighting of February 1934.

  4. A modern council building 21 min

The walk ends outside a modern council building, built decades after Karl-Marx-Hof but working on the same principle. The guide explains how Vienna still houses roughly half its residents in council-owned flats today.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Vienna: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Wiener schnitzel and Neubau, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vienna time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
