Plovdiv claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe. I am a historian, so I will tell you that this is debatable, and then I will show you why the claim is not unreasonable. I worked at the Regional Archaeological Museum for eighteen years. My walk goes from the Roman stadium under the main street to the Old Town, with its Revival-era merchant houses painted in blue and ochre, the Roman theatre that still hosts opera in summer, and the Kapana district, where the old craft streets are now full of galleries and small bars.
