Rachel Saltiel

My family has Sephardic roots in Chania going back generations, though the community here nearly disappeared entirely during the war. On camera I walk the narrow lanes of the old Jewish quarter, explaining what Evraiki looked like when it was a full neighbourhood, then stop at the courtyard of Etz Hayyim Synagogue, restored and active again after decades of near ruin. I keep filming to the courtyard and exterior out of respect for the space inside. I speak carefully about this history, since it is not just architecture to me but a story about my own family.
