The old Jewish quarter, quietly kept
Highlights
- A quarter nearly lost, then restored
- A synagogue brought back from ruin
- A family history, carefully told
- Narrow lanes, a full past
- Respect kept for an active space
About this tour
This session walks the lanes of Evraiki, Chania's old Jewish quarter, ending at the courtyard of a synagogue restored after decades of ruin. You hear this history from someone whose own family has Sephardic roots in the town. It stays respectful of an active place of worship throughout, filming only the courtyard and exterior.
I walk slowly through the quiet lanes, explaining what stood here before the community was nearly lost, and speak carefully once we reach the synagogue itself. Questions are welcome throughout.
This suits anyone interested in Jewish heritage or the town's wider history of different communities. It also works well as a quieter counterpoint to the busier harbour area.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Chania before heading out.
-
Evraiki lanes 15 min
You see the narrow lanes of the old Jewish quarter, and I explain what this neighbourhood looked like when it held a full community rather than the small one that remains.
-
Etz Hayyim Synagogue courtyard 15 min
The camera stops at the courtyard of the restored synagogue, and I describe how it was brought back after decades of near ruin following the war.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Chania: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Greek salad and Splantzia, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
