I trained as a local history teacher before I started guiding, and the Mercado de Escravos is the site I take the most care preparing for, since its history is difficult and deserves to be explained plainly rather than rushed through. On camera I keep the pace slow and let the museum's own displays carry the facts, adding context rather than commentary. At the Igreja de Santo Antonio nearby I switch tone completely, pointing out the gilded woodwork detail by detail. Ten years in, I still rehearse how I open that first session before every booking.
