About this tour
This session shows the exterior and courtyard of the Mercado de Escravos, the building on Praca Infante Dom Henrique associated with Europe's first slave market. I trained as a local history teacher, and I take particular care preparing for this session, since the history is difficult and deserves plain, careful explanation rather than a passing mention. You see the building's facade and its small courtyard, where the museum sets out that history for visitors.
We begin with a quiet sound check facing the building, then move into the courtyard, leaving space throughout for questions and for pauses. I send a short list of names and dates once the session ends, along with a note on the museum's own published research.
It suits travellers who want this part of Lagos' history explained honestly rather than skipped over, approached with the seriousness it deserves. This session stays in the museum's public courtyard and exterior; the interior exhibition rooms are not filmed.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lagos before heading out.
-
The building's facade 15 min
The camera shows the arcaded building on the square where Europe's first slave market operated from the 15th century, and I explain the museum's purpose in examining that history openly.
-
The courtyard 15 min
We move into the small courtyard behind the facade, and I point out the information panels the museum uses to place the building's history in context.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Lagos: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cataplana (seafood stew) and Meia Praia, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
