I am an archaeologist by training and spent seven years on excavations of the Greek and Roman city beneath the Duomo and San Lorenzo Maggiore. Naples is built on top of itself: a Greek city, a Roman city, medieval churches, Spanish barracks, and underneath all of it the tuff quarries that became cisterns and then air raid shelters in 1943. My tours go down and then back up. We walk through the Quartieri Spagnoli, built for Spanish soldiers in the 1500s and now full of murals of Maradona, and we visit the Sansevero Chapel for the Veiled Christ, which I explain without the legends about alchemy, or with them if you prefer. I speak Spanish because I spent a year at the University of Seville. The underground sections include some narrow passages.
