About this tour

This session follows the layers of Naples from the entrance to its underground tunnels through to the Spanish Quarter and Via Toledo. You hear about the Greek and Roman quarries and wartime shelters below the street, see where a Roman theatre survives inside a modern apartment block, and pass the murals of Maradona that cover whole buildings in the Quartieri Spagnoli. The walk ends on Via Toledo, looking into the Galleria Umberto.

The call begins with a sound check, then moves point by point from below ground to street level, with pauses to answer questions as you go. A short note on visiting the tunnels yourself follows the call.

This suits anyone interested in Naples's layered history, both ancient and wartime, and its street life today.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Naples before heading out.

  2. Napoli Sotterranea entrance 21 min

From the entrance stairway, the guide describes the Greek and Roman quarries forty metres below the street, and the cisterns and tunnels turned into air raid shelters during the bombing of 1943.

  3. A Roman theatre in the walls 21 min

Standing outside an ordinary apartment block, the guide points out where a Roman theatre survives built into the walls and floors of the building above it.

  4. Quartieri Spagnoli and Via Toledo 21 min

Walking into the Spanish Quarter, the camera passes murals of Maradona painted across whole buildings, before the street opens onto Via Toledo and the glass roof of the Galleria Umberto.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Naples: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Babà and Chiaia, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
