About this tour

This session follows Paul Cézanne through the city he never really left, from the fountains of Cours Mirabeau to the studio he built on the northern hill. You see the window he designed for painting light and the same view of Montagne Sainte-Victoire that appears in dozens of his canvases. Along the way I point out the small, ordinary corners of Aix that turn up again and again in his work.

We start with a short sound check, then move at an easy pace between the three stops, pausing longer wherever the light is doing something interesting. Questions come in throughout, and I will double back on camera if someone wants a longer look at a detail. Afterwards I send a short list of the paintings each stop connects to, so you can look them up later.

This suits anyone with a passing interest in Cézanne or in how a place shapes a painter's eye, no art history required. It also works well for a slower session, since there is a lot to look at without much walking between stops.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Aix-en-Provence before heading out.

  2. Cours Mirabeau 21 min

You start on Cours Mirabeau, under the plane trees that line the avenue from end to end. The camera catches the mossy Fontaine d'Eau Chaude, one of four fountains on the street, and I explain why the water still runs warm.

  3. Atelier Cézanne 21 min

Up the hill, the camera holds on the outside of Cézanne's studio, kept much as he left it. I point out the tall north-facing window he built specifically for painting light, visible from the street.

  4. View toward Sainte-Victoire 21 min

From a terrace above the studio, you get the same angle on the mountain that Cézanne painted again and again. I explain how the limestone catches colour differently through the day, which is what drew him back so often.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Aix-en-Provence: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ratatouille and Forum des Cardeurs, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
