Old town lanes and a courtyard fountain
Highlights
- Carved stone heads above old doorways
- A courtyard fountain off the main street
- Cathedral panels carved centuries ago
- Narrow lanes barely touched by the sun
- Aix seen at a slower pace
About this tour
This walk stays inside the old town, following narrow lanes from Rue Espariat to a quiet courtyard fountain and finally to a side door of Saint-Sauveur Cathedral. You see carved stone heads above doorways, moss growing where the sun barely reaches, and wooden panels carved centuries ago. It is a route built around small details rather than the obvious landmarks.
We move slowly, since these lanes are narrow and there is a lot to look at close up, with a longer pause at the courtyard fountain. I answer questions as they come, and if something catches your eye I will step back for another angle. A short list of what we saw follows the call.
This suits anyone who prefers quiet streets over busy squares and likes noticing details rather than covering ground quickly. It also pairs well with a session on Cours Mirabeau for contrast.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Aix-en-Provence before heading out.
-
Rue Espariat 17 min
You follow a narrow lane just off Cours Mirabeau, where the camera catches carved stone heads above several doorways. I explain how the street kept its medieval width while the buildings above it grew taller over the centuries.
-
A courtyard fountain 17 min
You step through a narrow passage into a small courtyard fountain unknown to most people walking the street outside it. I point out the moss pattern that only grows on this stone because the courtyard rarely gets direct sun.
-
Saint-Sauveur's side door 17 min
The lane ends at a small side door into the cathedral, and the camera holds on the carved wooden panels set into it. I explain which parts are original and which were replaced after damage during the Revolution.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Aix-en-Provence: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fougasse and Forum des Cardeurs, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
