Akureyrarkirkja and the streets of Brekkan
Highlights
- A modernist church above the town
- A long flight of steps, climbed live
- Houses built to face the fjord
- 1940s architecture in context
- Brekkan's steep residential streets
About this tour
This session climbs Akureyri's best known hill to its modernist church, then moves through the residential streets built around it. You see the long flight of steps and the church's facade up close, and the houses arranged to catch the fjord view beyond. It stays on the hill throughout, moving at a steady uphill pace.
We open with a short sound check at the base of the steps, then climb stop by stop with pauses to talk through the architecture and the streets around it. I take questions live as they come and send a short note afterwards on the church's design for anyone who wants to read further.
It suits anyone interested in 20th-century architecture, and anyone wanting a proper sense of the town's layout before exploring further themselves.

Akureyrarkirkja steps and facade 21 min
The camera climbs the long flight of steps to the church, and I explain how the modernist design was completed in 1940 during a difficult period for the country.
-

You see the steep streets around the church, and I point out how houses here were built to face the fjord view rather than the road.

-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish soup and Brekkan, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
