About this tour

This early session follows Akureyri's working harbour through the eyes of someone who has fished from it for most of his life, from boats at dock to the harbour mouth looking out to open water. You see the practical side of the port rather than its tourist face, with real detail on the boats and the trade. It moves at a steady early-morning pace along the waterfront.

After a short sound check at the dock, I walk the harbour stop by stop, explaining what I am pointing at from decades of working here myself. I answer questions live as they come and send a short note afterwards on the fishing calendar for anyone who wants to know more.

It suits anyone interested in maritime working life, and early risers who want to see the harbour before the town wakes up.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Akureyri before heading out.

  2. The fishing boats at dock 17 min

The camera moves along boats tied up for the morning, and I explain gear and details on deck from decades spent working boats out of this harbour.

  3. The fish market corner 17 min

You see where the day's catch is weighed and sorted, and I point out how the trade has changed since I started working here.

  4. The harbour's edge toward open water 17 min

The walk finishes at the harbour mouth looking out toward the fjord, and I explain how weather and ice conditions shaped the fishing calendar through the year.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Akureyri: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Lamb soup (kjötsúpa) and Innbær, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Reykjavik time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
