The basilica and the quarter beside it
Highlights
- A Gothic facade over a former mosque
- Where thirteenth-century conquest reshaped the city
- A quiet corner above the basilica
- The bell tower seen from Santa Cruz
- Religion and neighbourhood, linked on camera
About this tour
This session pairs the Basilica of Santa María with the quarter that grew up beside it. You see the Gothic facade, built where the city's mosque once stood, and a quiet corner of Barrio Santa Cruz just above with a view of the bell tower. It links Alicante's religious history to its oldest surviving neighbourhood.
I start at the basilica's main door and climb a short distance into Santa Cruz for the view back down. I answer questions on either the church or the quarter as we go, and send a short note afterwards.
This suits anyone interested in how conquest and religion shaped Alicante's old town. It also works well as a shorter companion to a full castle session.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
