The locks that manage a canal's water, live
Highlights
- Locks still operated by hand today
- How the canals are flushed clean at night
- A bridge modelled on a famous Parisian one
- Ironwork details most people cross without seeing
- Infrastructure and decoration in one short session
About this tour
This session looks at the working side of Amsterdam's canals, a set of locks that quietly manage the whole system's water level and quality, plus one of the city's more decorative bridges nearby. You see the lock gates up close and then the ornate ironwork of the bridge a short walk away. It pairs plain infrastructure with a purely decorative structure in one short session.
We spend the most time at the locks, since the mechanism itself takes a moment to properly explain, before moving to the bridge for a lighter, more visual finish. I answer questions about either stop as they come.
It suits anyone curious about how the canal system actually functions behind the scenery. It also works well for viewers who enjoyed a similar lock session elsewhere and want the Amsterdam version.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Amsterdam before heading out.
-
Amstelsluizen 15 min
You see a set of locks still operated by hand, used to manage the water level and freshness of the whole canal system, and I explain how they are opened at night to flush the canals.
-
Blauwbrug 15 min
The camera moves to a decorative bridge modelled on a famous Parisian one, and I point out details in its ironwork most people cross without noticing.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Amsterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Poffertjes and Jordaan, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
