About this tour

This session follows the small Byzantine churches tucked between the shopping streets of central Athens, starting at Kapnikarea on Ermou and finishing at the old cathedral of Agios Eleftherios. Eleni walks close to the stonework so you can see the brick patterns and reused marble that most people pass without noticing. She explains how these churches survived centuries of rebuilding around them while the city grew taller on every side.

After a quick sound check, Eleni moves between the two churches at an easy pace, stopping wherever the light is good enough to show the detail on camera. You can ask questions as she goes, and she often circles back to a carving if someone wants a second look. She sends a short list of the churches and a few history notes once the call ends.

This suits anyone curious about Athens beyond the Acropolis, especially those interested in Byzantine architecture or church history. It also works well as a quieter add-on to a longer trip through the city.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Athens before heading out.

  2. Kapnikarea 21 min

The camera holds steady on the small domed church sitting below street level in the middle of Ermou, traffic passing on either side, and Eleni points out the eleventh century brickwork pattern above the door.

  3. Agios Eleftherios 21 min

Outside the older cathedral built from recycled ancient marble fragments, you see carved reliefs set into the walls at odd angles, pieces the builders reused from monuments centuries older than the church itself.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Athens: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Souvlaki and Monastiraki, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
