Cathedral and convent: Aveiro's older stone
Highlights
- A cathedral rebuilt across five centuries
- A convent's plain face hiding gilded rooms
- Princess Joana's story, told outside the walls
- Aveiro's oldest religious buildings, together
- History older than the canal itself
About this tour
This session covers the two oldest religious buildings in central Aveiro, the cathedral and the former convent beside it, both seen from outside. Nuno traces how the cathedral changed use and appearance over five centuries before moving to the convent's plain exterior. He explains what each building holds inside, even where the camera cannot follow.
Nuno keeps the pace measured between the two buildings, since both reward a longer look at their exteriors rather than a quick pass. He answers questions about the interiors honestly, describing what is there rather than pretending the camera can show it. A short note on Princess Joana's story follows the session.
This suits anyone interested in Aveiro's history before the canal and the tiles took over its image. It also gives useful background for a visit to the convent's museum on your own.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Aveiro before heading out.
-
Sé de Aveiro 21 min
The camera holds on the cathedral's plain stone front, rebuilt more than once since its founding as a convent church. Nuno explains how the building changed use and style over five centuries.
-
Convento de Jesus, from outside 21 min
Outside the former convent, Nuno points out the plain exterior that gives no hint of the gilded interior it holds. He explains the story of Princess Joana, buried inside, without being able to show the tomb itself on camera.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Aveiro: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Tripas de Aveiro and Beira-Mar, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
