  • An ordinary spot with a darker past
  • A small, specific piece of old Bari
  • History read from a single worn stone

About this tour

This session stops at the Colonna della Giustizia, a column in the old town with a much darker past than its quiet setting suggests. You see the worn carving up close and the ordinary square around it, with the practice of publicly naming debtors explained in detail. It is a small, specific piece of the old town's history.

I stay close on the column and explain its history in full before widening out to the square around it, taking questions as they come. I send a short note afterwards with a little more background.

This suits anyone who likes the smaller, stranger corners of a city's history. It also works well as a short stop within a longer old town session.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection
  • Travel to the city

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bari before heading out.

  2. Colonna della Giustizia 15 min

You see the worn stone column where debtors were once publicly named, and I explain how the practice worked in the old town.

  3. The square around it 15 min

I point out how ordinary the square looks today, a detail I like to draw attention to against the column's grim history.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Bari: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Tiella di riso, patate e cozze and Murat, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
