About this tour

This session walks Bryggen and its Hanseatic history, from the wharf's wooden passages to the merchant house that now holds the Hanseatic Museum, then on to St Mary's Church and Bergenhus Fortress. The guide describes the assembly rooms and merchant life from outside the museum's ticketed rooms. It traces how German traders shaped this stretch of harbour for centuries.

The call opens with a sound check, then follows the four stops along the wharf and up toward the fortress, with time for questions about Hanseatic trade along the way. A short list of names and dates follows once the call ends.

This suits anyone interested in medieval trade history or Norwegian architecture, whether visiting soon or not. It also suits anyone who wants Bryggen explained beyond its postcard view.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bergen before heading out.

  2. Bryggen wooden passages 21 min

The camera moves through the narrow wooden passages of Bryggen, and the guide explains how this row of merchant houses has stood on the same footprint since the Hanseatic League traded here.

  3. Hanseatic Museum building 21 min

Outside the old merchant house that now holds the Hanseatic Museum, the guide describes the assembly rooms called Schøtstuene, where merchants once ate and met, since both are part of the museum's ticketed rooms.

  4. St Mary's Church 21 min

Outside St Mary's Church, the oldest building still standing in Bergen, the guide explains what has survived from its earliest construction through the city's many fires.

  5. Bergenhus Fortress 21 min

The walk ends near Bergenhus Fortress, where the guide points out Håkon's Hall and explains what the fortress has guarded at the harbour entrance since the thirteenth century.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Bergen: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish soup (fiskesuppe) and Bryggen, worth a slower look.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
