About this tour

This session walks Nordnes and Sandviken, two of Bergen's old wooden neighbourhoods, from the narrow lanes around the Seattle totem pole to the outdoor sea bath and the wooden rows of Sandviken. The guide explains how the city kept rebuilding in wood after repeated fires, and what eventually changed that habit. It looks at Bergen's residential side rather than its harbour front.

The call opens with a sound check, then follows the four stops around both peninsulas, with time for questions about the fires and the rebuilding along the way. A short list of streets worth a longer look follows once the call ends.

This suits anyone interested in wooden architecture or everyday Bergen rather than its main sights. It also suits returning visitors who want to see beyond Bryggen.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bergen before heading out.

  2. Nordnes lanes 21 min

The camera winds through the narrow lanes of Nordnes, and the guide explains how this peninsula neighbourhood kept its small wooden houses while much of the city around it changed.

  3. The Seattle totem pole 21 min

Standing beside the totem pole, a gift from Bergen's sister city Seattle, the guide explains how the two port cities came to exchange it and why it still stands here.

  4. Nordnes sea bath 21 min

Looking out over the Nordnes sea bath, the outdoor pool built into the fjord, the guide explains how locals use it through the seasons, including the ones who swim through winter.

  5. Sandviken wooden houses 21 min

In Sandviken, the guide points out rows of old wooden houses and explains how the city rebuilt in wood again and again after its great fires, and what finally changed that.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Bergen: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Smoked salmon and Bryggen, worth a slower look.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
