Gendarmenmarkt: two cathedrals and a concert hall
Highlights
- Two cathedrals built to mirror each other
- A concert hall between matching domes
- Schiller's statue on the Konzerthaus steps
- Gendarmenmarkt's careful symmetry
- One square, two very different histories
About this tour
This session looks at Gendarmenmarkt, from the two domed cathedrals facing each other to the Konzerthaus between them. You see why the German and French cathedrals were built to mirror one another despite serving different congregations. The session finishes at the concert hall, with the statue of the composer Schiller standing on its steps.
We open with a short sound check on the square. I move slowly between the three buildings and take questions about the concert hall's programme and the cathedrals' history throughout. Afterwards I send a short note on the small differences between the two domes.
This suits anyone interested in classical architecture or the city's concert life. It also works well as a calm, compact session in central Mitte.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
