East Berlin's secret geography
Highlights
- Ordinary walls hiding extraordinary purposes
- Small details that gave away a secret
- East German surveillance, hidden in plain sight
- Buildings identified only after reunification
- A quieter, stranger side of the city
About this tour
This session looks at a couple of East Berlin's deliberately unremarkable sites, from a plain compound wall to a former surveillance post nearby. You see how several security buildings were designed to look ordinary from the street. The session finishes at the surveillance post, with small details like extra antennas that gave its real purpose away to those who knew what to look for.
We keep a steady, careful pace throughout and take questions as they come. I explain how these sites were identified after reunification and what became of them. Afterwards I send a short note on further reading for anyone who wants more detail.
This suits anyone with a specific interest in surveillance history and how it hid in plain sight. It pairs well with the Hohenschönhausen session for a fuller picture.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Berlin before heading out.
-
An unmarked compound wall 15 min
The camera takes in a plain residential-looking wall, and I explain how several East German security compounds were deliberately built to look unremarkable from the street.
-
A former surveillance post 15 min
We move past a nondescript building, and I point out small details, like extra antennas or blacked-out windows, that gave away its real purpose to those who knew what to look for.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Berlin: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Döner kebab and Prenzlauer Berg, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 7 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
