About this tour

This session covers Tempelhof field, the old city airport turned public park, from its open runways to the terminal building and the community gardens planted on its old tarmac. The camera walks the same ground pilots and passengers once used. The guide explains the Berlin Airlift, the building's scale and the 2014 vote that decided the field's future.

The call opens with a short sound check, then follows the field stop by stop as the guide walks across it, leaving time for questions about the airport's history. A short list of the stops and further reading follows by message afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in twentieth-century history or unusual public spaces, whether planning a visit to Berlin or simply curious about an airport that became a park. It also works for anyone who likes an open, quiet kind of walk.

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Berlin before heading out.

  2. Tempelhof runways 21 min

The camera walks straight down one of Tempelhof's old runways, now open ground with nothing overhead, and the guide explains just how large this airfield was when it was still operating flights.

  3. Terminal and air bridge memorial 21 min

From outside the terminal building, one of the largest built structures in Europe at the time, the guide points to the air bridge memorial and tells the story of the Berlin Airlift and the pilots who dropped sweets to children below.

  4. Community gardens on the apron 21 min

Vegetable beds and small plots now cover part of the old apron where planes once parked, and the guide explains the 2014 public vote that kept the whole field open rather than building on it.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Berlin: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Eisbein (pork knuckle) and Prenzlauer Berg, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
