Pelota and the real Basque Biarritz
Highlights
- A working Basque pelota court
- The sport's real rules, explained
- Basque signs across the old town
- A few Basque words worth knowing
- Biarritz's Basque side, away from the beach
About this tour
This session shows a side of Biarritz that most visitors miss entirely, its Basque sporting and cultural life away from the beach. You see a working pelota court and the old town's Basque shopfronts and signage. It is a session about identity rather than seafront architecture.
We start at the fronton, since the court itself takes some explaining, then move through the old town at a relaxed pace. I point out Basque language and culture as we pass rather than saving it for one long explanation. A short list of the words and places we covered follows the call.
This suits anyone curious about Basque culture specifically rather than the French Riviera image of Biarritz. It also works well alongside a beach-focused session on another day.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Biarritz before heading out.
-
Jai Alai fronton 21 min
The camera shows the walled court where Basque pelota is played, a fast local sport rarely explained properly to visitors. I point out the difference between the version played here and the one exported abroad under other names.
-
Halles quarter Basque shopfronts 21 min
We walk through the old town past shopfronts selling Basque linen, berets and espadrilles, signs written in both French and Basque. I explain a few Basque words you will see everywhere once you know to look for them.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Biarritz: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Basque cider and Les Halles quarter, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
