About this tour

This session follows the coast west of Bilbao, from the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe to the fishing port of Bermeo and the estuary at Mundaka. You see the cliffs of the Urdaibai coast and the boats working the harbour. It is a route built around water, rock and one very long staircase.

The call opens with a sound check, then follows the coast stop by stop as the guide narrates from each. Questions come in as you go, and a short list of the places covered follows by message afterwards.

This suits anyone drawn to coastlines rather than city centres, whether planning a trip to the Basque Country or simply missing the sea. It also suits viewers who like their history told from a cliff edge.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bilbao before heading out.

  2. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe 21 min

The camera climbs the 241 steps to the hermitage on its islet, connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. The guide points out the drop on both sides and the open Atlantic beyond.

  3. Urdaibai cliffs 21 min

Along the Urdaibai coast the camera follows the cliff line, showing the folded rock layers exposed in the rock face. The guide traces how the layers tilt, a record of the coastline's slow buckling.

  4. Bermeo fishing port 21 min

In the working port of Bermeo, boats unload alongside the quay while the guide explains how the anchovy catch is sorted. A coffee stop in the old harbour gives a still moment to watch the fleet.

  5. Mundaka estuary 21 min

At Mundaka, where the estuary meets the open sea, the camera pans across the sandbar and the moored boats. The guide points out Bermeo across the water and how the tide reshapes the channel through the day.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Bilbao: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Marmitako and Casco Viejo, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
