Small details of Piazza Maggiore
Highlights
- Carvings most visitors walk past
- A side portal, closely studied
- Detail read slowly, stone by stone
- A square seen differently
- Sculptural style explained plainly
About this tour
This session looks at Piazza Maggiore through its smaller carved details rather than its overall scale. You see decorative work on a palace facade most people walk past, and sculpted figures around a side portal of San Petronio. The camera stays close on stone throughout, moving slowly enough to actually read the carving.
We spend the whole session close on detail rather than pulling back for wider context, since that context is easy to see in almost any photograph of the square. I explain the sculptural style as we go, and answer questions on individual figures.
It suits anyone who already knows the square's general layout and wants something closer and less obvious. It also complements the Neptune fountain session well.

At a side entrance to San Petronio, I point out sculpted figures around the doorway that most visitors never notice from the main square.

-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Mortadella and Quadrilatero, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
