About this tour

This session covers Špilberk Castle from its defensive ramparts to its darker history as a political prison, finishing with a lookout over the city it once controlled. You see the outer walls that held off a Swedish siege, the courtyard near the old cell block, and finally the view that explains why the site was chosen at all. It is a fuller picture of the fortress than the view alone gives.

I move steadily between the three stops, spending longer on the prison history since it tends to raise the most questions. Questions come throughout rather than at a fixed point, and I am happy to go into more detail on a specific period if you ask. A short note on the fortress's current museum exhibits follows afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in military or political history rather than only the view. It also works well as a first session before exploring the old town below.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Brno before heading out.

  2. Castle ramparts 21 min

The camera moves along the outer ramparts, and I explain how the fortress withstood a Swedish siege in the Thirty Years' War.

  3. Courtyard and cells 21 min

We move into the courtyard near the old cell block, and I describe conditions inside when the Habsburgs used the fortress as one of their harshest prisons.

  4. Lookout over the city 21 min

The session ends at a lookout point, and I turn the camera out over Brno's rooftops so you see how the fortress commands the whole valley.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Brno: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Moravský vrabec (roast pork, 'Moravian sparrow') and Staré Brno (Old Brno), worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Prague time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 11 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
