About this tour

This session climbs from the daily flea market on Place du Jeu de Balle up to the chocolatiers of the Sablon. You see fries cooked in beef fat at a Marolles friterie and pralines set out in three shop windows further up the hill. It ends at the Palais de Justice lookout with Brussels spread out below.

The guide checks sound at the market, then works uphill stall by stall and shop by shop, explaining each stop as it comes up. Questions can come in about the market, the food or the chocolate throughout the call. A short list of the shops and stalls follows afterwards.

This suits anyone planning a food and shopping route through Brussels who wants the order mapped out first. It also suits former visitors who only shopped in one of these two neighbourhoods and missed the other.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Brussels before heading out.

  2. Place du Jeu de Balle 21 min

The camera moves through the daily flea market on Place du Jeu de Balle, stalls of secondhand furniture and odd finds laid out on tarpaulins. The guide explains what turns up here most mornings and who actually buys it.

  3. A Marolles friterie 21 min

At a friterie the camera watches fries come out of beef fat, the traditional method most Brussels stands have moved away from. The guide explains the difference and points to a bakery nearby selling waffles the Brussels way, thinner and less sweet than the Liège version.

  4. The Sablon and Palais de Justice 21 min

The walk climbs into the Sablon, where the camera passes three chocolatiers' window displays of pralines. The guide finishes at the Palais de Justice lookout, reached by a public lift up the hillside.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Brussels: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Speculoos and Îlot Sacré, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Brussels time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
