About this tour

This session covers Communist-era Budapest through Memento Park and the marks left in the city itself. The camera moves among the toppled statues gathered at Memento Park, past a marker for Stalin's boots at its entrance, and back into the city for the Soviet memorial in Liberty Square and the bullet-scarred walls nearby. It closes outside the House of Terror, described from the pavement rather than the exhibition inside.

After a sound check, the walk moves from the edge of the city back to its centre, with the guide taking questions about specific statues and buildings as they come up. A short timeline of the events referenced on the walk follows once the call ends.

This suits anyone interested in twentieth-century Hungarian history and how a city chooses to remember or remove its monuments. It also suits anyone who has walked past these buildings without knowing what happened at each one.

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Budapest before heading out.

  2. Memento Park 21 min

The camera moves among toppled-era statues of Lenin, Marx and Soviet soldiers, gathered here after being pulled from squares across the city, each one still on the pedestal it once stood on elsewhere.

  3. Stalin's boots 21 min

Near the park's entrance, the camera holds on a marker recreating Stalin's boots, all that was left standing after the crowd pulled his statue down during the 1956 uprising.

  4. Liberty Square and bullet marks 21 min

Back in the city, the camera passes the Soviet memorial in Liberty Square, then the pockmarked walls of nearby buildings, where bullet marks from 1956 have never been fully repaired.

  5. House of Terror 21 min

The walk ends outside the House of Terror, and the camera holds on the building's facade while the guide explains what happened inside during two different regimes.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Budapest: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Paprika-based stews and Buda Castle District, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Budapest time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
