A hospital built into the hill itself
Highlights
- A hospital carved beneath a hill
- Natural rock used as cover
- Two conflicts, one underground ward
- Castle Hill's hidden wartime history
- A tunnel system built for survival
About this tour
This session goes underground into the Hospital in the Rock, a wartime hospital carved into the tunnels beneath Castle Hill. You see the entrance and then the corridor connecting its ward spaces, with an explanation of why the site was chosen and how long it stayed in use. It stays within the tunnel system throughout.
I keep a formal, measured pace after a short sound check, since the site's history spans more than one difficult period. Questions about the hospital's operation are welcome throughout.
This suits anyone with a serious interest in twentieth century history rather than a lighter castle overview. It also works well as a final session after the castle and church tours.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Budapest before heading out.
-
Bunker Entrance 15 min
The camera enters the tunnel leading to the wartime hospital carved beneath Castle Hill, and I explain why the site was chosen for its natural rock cover.
-
Corridor of Wards 15 min
You see the narrow corridor connecting the old ward spaces, and I describe how the hospital kept working through two separate conflicts before finally closing.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Budapest: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Goulash and Jewish Quarter (Erzsébetváros), worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Budapest time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
