The Roman theatre beneath Barrio del Pópulo
Highlights
- One of Spain's largest Roman theatres
- Found by accident in the 1980s
- Homes standing over the rest
- Seating tiers cut into stone
- A city built on its own past
About this tour
This session covers the Roman theatre uncovered beneath Barrio del Pópulo, from its excavated stone seating tiers to the ordinary houses still standing over the unexcavated remainder. You see how much has been recovered and how much genuinely cannot be, at least for now. The two stops sit close together, so the session moves at an easy pace.
We begin at the excavated tiers with a short check of the light, then move to the street above to explain what still lies underneath. I answer questions about the accidental 1980s discovery in some detail, since that tends to draw the most interest.
This suits history-minded travellers curious about what a city keeps hidden under itself, and anyone who enjoys archaeology explained plainly. It runs at a steady, factual pace.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cadiz before heading out.
-
The visible seating tiers 21 min
The camera settles on the excavated stone seating tiers of one of the largest Roman theatres found in Spain, and I explain how it was uncovered by accident during building work in the 1980s.
-
The houses above 21 min
You see the ordinary residential buildings standing directly over the unexcavated part of the theatre, and I explain why digging further would mean removing homes people still live in today.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Cadiz: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ortiguillas and Santa María, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
