About this tour

This session is built around one persistent piece of college folklore, the claim that the Mathematical Bridge at Queens' College was built without any nails. It looks closely at the bridge's timber joints and the plaque recording its later rebuild, using both to separate what is actually documented from what has simply been repeated for years. It is a short session about how myths take hold in an old university town.

We start at the bridge itself with a close look at the joinery, then move to the nearby plaque for the documented rebuild. I take questions throughout about other college myths, since most viewers arrive with at least one they have heard already. I close by naming a few other local stories worth being sceptical of.

It suits anyone who enjoys a bit of myth-busting alongside their history. It also works well as a shorter add-on to a longer college session booked the same day.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cambridge before heading out.

  2. Mathematical Bridge deck 21 min

The camera moves along the wooden footbridge at Queens' College, and I explain how its tight geometric joints gave rise to a long-running myth that it was built without a single nail, which the surviving records do not support.

  3. Riverside plaque 21 min

Nearby, a small plaque marks a rebuild of the bridge in the 20th century, and I use it to explain how the myth kept spreading even after the bridge itself had been taken apart and reassembled.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Cambridge: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Sunday roast and Newnham, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
