About this tour

This session covers Mill Road, the residential street most visitors never reach, seen partly from a moving bicycle and partly on foot for the busier stretches. It takes in the railway bridge marking the street's start and the shopfronts and places of worship that give the road its character. It is the city's everyday face rather than its university one.

We start on the bridge with the phone mounted for the ride, then dismount partway to walk the busiest section on foot. Questions about the different shops and communities come up steadily, and I answer from years of living just off this street. I close with a note on which days the street market runs.

It suits viewers curious about how residents actually live in Cambridge, away from the colleges. It also suits anyone who has already done the standard university route and wants something different.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cambridge before heading out.

  2. Mill Road bridge 21 min

The ride starts on the railway bridge marking the entrance to the street, and I explain how the road's character shifts noticeably once you cross to the other side.

  3. Shops and mosque frontage 21 min

Riding slowly past the independent shops and a mosque frontage, I point out how the street reflects decades of different communities settling along the same half-mile.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Cambridge: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Steak and ale pie and Newnham, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
