Mill Road's food streets by bike

- A street shaped by several communities
- A bakery supplying local cafes
- A brief conversation with a shop owner
- A shop list sent after the ride
About this tour
This session looks at Mill Road through its food shops, from independent grocers to a small bakery that supplies several nearby cafes. The camera moves slowly by bike between shopfronts, pausing to talk briefly with people who work there. It shows a side of Cambridge shaped by trade and migration rather than the university.
We start with the grocers and their range of produce, then move on to the bakery for a short conversation with the owner. Questions about specific ingredients or dishes come up often, and I answer what I can from years of shopping on this street myself. I send a short list of shop names afterwards for anyone planning their own visit.
It suits food-curious viewers who want to see where a neighbourhood actually shops. It also suits anyone interested in the street's layered immigration history told through its shopfronts.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cambridge before heading out.
-
Grocers and spice shops 15 min
The camera passes a row of independent grocers, and I explain how the range of spices and vegetables on display reflects the street's mix of South Asian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern communities.
-
Street food stop 15 min
Outside a small bakery, I talk to the owner briefly on camera about what is fresh that day, and explain how the shop supplies several of the street's cafes.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Cambridge: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish and chips and The Kite, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
