  • Reading a ruin like a floor plan

About this tour

This call walks the ruined abbey grounds founded in the sixth century, focused on reading the layout from what actually survives rather than what has been lost. You see the broken nave walls first, then a stretch of foundation stones marking an older chapel. I explain how much of the original plan can still be worked out on the ground.

We move slowly between the low walls, pausing often since overcast light shows the stone detail best, and take questions throughout. A short sketch of the abbey's original layout follows by message.

This suits anyone who enjoys puzzling out history from tangible remains rather than finished buildings. It also works well alongside a cathedral call on the same day.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Canterbury before heading out.

  2. The fallen nave walls 15 min

The camera holds on the low, broken walls that once formed the abbey's nave, and I explain how the layout can still be traced from what remains at ground level.

  3. Surviving foundation stones 15 min

You see a stretch of foundation stones marking where a chapel once stood, and I point out the tool marks still visible on some of the oldest blocks.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Canterbury: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kentish apples and Westgate, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
