Whitefriars, a street built on a friary
Highlights
- A shopping street built on a friary
- A preserved fragment among modern shops
- What stood here before today's buildings
- History kept rather than cleared away
- An easy, light walking session
About this tour
This call walks the city's main shopping street, built over the site of a medieval friary that gave the street its name. You see the present-day shopfronts first, then a small preserved fragment of older stonework kept among them. I explain what the site looked like before any of today's buildings existed.
We move along the street at a shopper's pace, pausing at the preserved fragment for questions, then continue toward the quieter end. A short note on the friary's history follows by message.
This suits anyone who likes finding older history hiding inside a modern street. It also works well as a lighter session between two heavier historical calls.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Canterbury before heading out.
-
The modern street 15 min
The camera moves along the present-day shopping street, and I explain what stood on this ground centuries earlier before any of today's buildings were built.
-
A surviving fragment 15 min
You see a small preserved section of older stonework set among the modern shopfronts, and I point out how it was kept rather than cleared during redevelopment.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Canterbury: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Whitstable oysters and St Dunstan's, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
