Llandaff Cathedral, rebuilt twice
Highlights
- A mediaeval village absorbed by a city
- Stonework that survived a wartime raid
- A striking modern sculpture inside
- Two rebuilds, centuries apart
- A quiet cathedral green
About this tour
This call looks at Llandaff Cathedral, a mediaeval church at the centre of a village that Cardiff eventually grew around and absorbed. You see the green, the surviving older stonework and a striking modern sculpture added after wartime bomb damage. I explain how the building survived two very different threats centuries apart.
We start on the cathedral green with a sound check, then move inside for the sculpture and the rebuilt sections. Questions come up naturally, and I send a short note on the building's two restorations afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in church history or twentieth century design choices inside old buildings. It also works as a quieter stop away from the main city centre.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cardiff before heading out.
-
Cathedral green approach 21 min
You walk into the cathedral green, once the centre of a separate mediaeval village now absorbed into the city, and I point out the older stonework that survived a 1941 bombing raid.
-
Modern Christ figure 21 min
Inside, filming is welcome, and you see a large modern sculpture of Christ set on a concrete arch, added when the cathedral was rebuilt after wartime damage.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Cardiff: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cawl and Pontcanna, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
