The cathedral rebuilt after 1693
Highlights
- Rebuilt almost entirely after 1693
- Traces of an older Norman cathedral
- A patron saint's church in lava stone
- One earthquake, one new city
- Centuries of history in a single facade
About this tour
This session looks at Catania Cathedral, dedicated to the city's patron saint and rebuilt almost entirely after the 1693 earthquake. You see the facade up close and a few surviving traces of the earlier Norman-era building tucked into the later reconstruction. The camera stays on the public square throughout.
I start with the facade and its rebuilding story, then move to the side where older stonework survives, taking questions as we go. I send a short timeline of the earthquake and rebuilding afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in how a whole city rebuilt itself in stone after a disaster. It also pairs naturally with a Piazza del Duomo session on the fountain nearby.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Catania before heading out.
-
The facade 21 min
The camera holds on the cathedral's facade, and I explain how almost everything visible today was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake destroyed most of the city.
-
Traces of the older building 21 min
I point out a few sections, including part of an apse, that survived from the earlier Norman-era cathedral before the disaster.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Catania: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cassata and Centro storico, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
