A Roman theatre built over a Greek one
Highlights
- A Roman theatre built over a Greek one
- Curved tiers shaped by two civilisations
- Underground streams still shaping the site
- Ancient Catania beneath the modern streets
- Two theatres, one continuous site
About this tour
This session looks at Catania's Roman theatre, built over an earlier Greek structure on the same spot. You see the curved tiers and the waterlogged lower level, still shaped by underground streams beneath the site. The camera stays on the public viewing areas throughout.
I start with a wide view over the tiers, then move down toward the lower, wetter section, explaining the layers of history involved. I take questions throughout and send a short note on the Greek and Roman phases afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in how one site can carry two civilisations' worth of building. It also pairs well with the Castello Ursino session for more of the city's ancient history.
Included

-
The theatre tiers 21 min
The camera looks down over the theatre's curved tiers, and I explain how the Roman structure was built directly over an earlier Greek theatre on the same site.
-
The waterlogged lower level 21 min
Pointing to the theatre's lowest section, still partly filled with water, I explain how the site's underground streams have shaped its condition over the centuries.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Catania: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Granita and brioche and Ognina, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
