Highlights

  • Balconies and shopfronts across the eras
  • Etna appearing at the end of the road
  • Catania's main avenue, end to end
  • A rebuilt city's clearest straight line

About this tour

This session walks the length of Via Etnea, the long straight avenue laid out after the 1693 earthquake to run directly toward the volcano. You see balconies and shopfronts from different periods along the way, and, weather permitting, a clear view of Etna itself at the end of the street. The route stays on this one public avenue throughout.

I walk at a steady pace, stopping to point out buildings from different periods, and pause longer wherever the volcano comes into view. I take questions along the way and send a short note on the street's layout afterwards.

It suits anyone who wants a longer, more complete walk through central Catania. It also works well paired with a shorter Etna view session on a clear day.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Catania before heading out.

  2. The avenue's start 21 min

The camera looks down Via Etnea from near the cathedral, and I explain how the street was laid out ruler-straight after the 1693 rebuilding.

  3. Shopfronts and balconies 21 min

Walking further along, you see balconies and shopfronts from different periods sitting side by side.

  4. A clear view of Etna 21 min

Where the buildings allow it, the camera catches a view of the volcano at the end of the street, weather permitting.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Catania: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Scacce and San Berillo, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
