About this tour

This session looks down the Cathedral's nave from just inside the entrance, one of the tallest Gothic interiors in the world, then describes the golden shrine at its heart from a respectful distance. You get a sense of the scale of the space and the history of what it holds. It stays near the entrance throughout, respecting the quiet of the working church.

We keep the camera steady at the doorway and I let the height of the nave speak for itself for a moment before explaining the numbers behind it. I describe the shrine's history carefully, since it cannot be filmed up close. A short note on the cathedral's treasures follows by message.

It suits anyone interested in medieval religious history and architecture. It works well as a quieter companion to the facade session, since together they cover both outside and in.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cologne before heading out.

  2. Nave from the entrance 15 min

Filming is permitted from just inside the entrance, and the camera looks straight down the nave, one of the tallest Gothic interiors anywhere, while I explain the scale in numbers that are easy to picture.

  3. Shrine of the Three Kings view 15 min

From a respectful distance, I describe the golden shrine behind the altar, one of the most important medieval reliquaries in Europe, without approaching closer than visitors are permitted.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Cologne: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Himmel un Ääd (black pudding with mash and apple) and Belgisches Viertel, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
