Inside Cork's English Market
Highlights
- Under the market's Victorian ironwork roof
- Stallholders at work on camera
- A market trading since 1788
- The central fountain from the gallery
- A stallholder's own market history
About this tour
This session takes you through Cork's covered Victorian food market from the fish counters to the upper gallery. You see stallholders at work under the original ironwork roof and hear the market's story from someone who worked a stall here herself. It stays close to the counters and the people running them rather than the wider street outside.
We start with a short sound check just inside the entrance, then move counter by counter with time to look before I explain what you are seeing. I take questions as they come, since people usually ask about specific stalls, and I send a short note afterwards on the market's opening hours and history.
It suits anyone curious about food markets and local trade, and anyone planning to visit Cork who wants a proper sense of the market before they go themselves.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cork before heading out.
-
The main market hall 21 min
The camera moves under the Victorian ironwork roof past the fish and meat counters, and I explain how the market has traded on this site continuously since 1788.
-
The fountain and gallery level 21 min
You see the market's central fountain from the upper gallery, and I point out how the layout has barely changed since a major fire in the 1980s and the rebuild that followed.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Cork: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cork spiced beef and Shandon, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
