Shandon's bells and steep streets
Highlights
- A tower faced in two different stones
- Bells visitors can ring themselves
- Steep terraces above the old butter market
- Cork's northside hill streets
- A working neighbourhood's own history
About this tour
This session climbs Cork's northside hill to the bell tower of Shandon and down through the steep streets below it. You see the tower's unusual two-coloured stonework and the working terraces built around the old butter trade. It moves slowly given the slope, with plenty of time to look properly.
We open with a sound check at the base of the hill, then climb stop by stop with breaks to talk through what you are seeing. Questions come in naturally on a slope like this, and I answer them as we go, sending a short note afterwards on the tower's bells and history.
It suits anyone who likes a working neighbourhood over a monument, and anyone curious about Cork's industrial past on the north side of the river.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cork before heading out.
-
Shandon Bell Tower 15 min
The camera looks up at the tower's two different stone faces, one pale limestone and one red sandstone, and I explain how visitors have been able to ring its bells themselves for over a century.
-
The steep streets below Shandon 15 min
You see the hillside streets dropping down toward the river, and I point out how the steep terraces were built to house the workers of the old butter market nearby.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Cork: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Crubeens and Shandon, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
